Academic Leaders

Faculty and Academic Affairs supports academic leaders as they build and strengthen the academic units within which faculty carry out the mission and strategic goals of the University of Minnesota.

Department Heads and Chairs

One of the key roles of Faculty and Academic Affairs is to support department chairs and heads as they lead their academic units. In addition to regular consulting about specific issues and opportunities, we facilitate a series of programs and events:

  • Provost's Academic Leadership Seminar, a year-long program designed to connect new chairs, heads and faculty associate deans with information and resources
  • Talking Heads series that invites all chairs/heads to come together to discuss particular aspects of their roles
  • Ongoing sessions to promote active conversation between heads/chairs and central administrators
  • Selected chairs' involvement in the Department Executive Officers (DEO) seminar collaboratively led by the Big Ten Academic Alliance

Big 10 Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program

The University of Minnesota collaborates with the other universities in the Big Ten Academic Alliance to provide an exceptional leadership opportunity for selected faculty. Six faculty leaders are selected from each campus to participate in a year-long program that consists of travel to three Big Ten campuses for intensive leadership conferences and on-campus dialogues with senior administrative leaders. Participants in this program have already demonstrated leadership in some capacity (often as department/program chairs or associate deans) and are exploring expanding their leadership contributions.

The application deadline for the 2023-24 Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Program has passed.
