Overview
Academic Analytics is a database that contains publicly available scholarly data on tenure system faculty research, including book publications, journal articles, citations, grants, patents, and other scholarly activities. Academic Analytics data is used on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus for the purpose of academic program review, program benchmarking, institutional research, job placement trends and analytics, and similar aggregative data purposes.
Academic Analytics data help users:
- Prepare for self-studies program review
- Identify peers and aspirational peers for benchmarking purposes
- Inform faculty recruitment and retention strategies
- Highlight program strengths in graduate and professional student recruitment
- Identify external grant opportunities relative to the University’s academic strengths
- Identify honorific award opportunities
- Identify faculty to serve as mentors and collaborators across departments
- Identify peers and aspirational peers for site visits
Acceptable Use of Data
Approved users on the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus have access to the “Alumni Insight,” “Benchmarking,” “Analysis on Demand,” and “Research Insight,” tools with varying levels of access depending on the role. Because Academic Analytics primarily is an aggregative benchmarking instrument that relies on limited publicly available data of individual faculty accomplishment, Academic Analytics may not be used for any type of individual personnel reviews, reappointment decisions, and related summative review purposes incl. salary, merit increases, promotion & tenure, and department budget and faculty allocations. Users must agree to these acceptable use provisions, which prohibits users from relying on the use of these data for the purpose of any type of personnel review and unit record data use.
For evaluative review purposes, departments and colleges may instead rely on Works, the University’s faculty activity reporting system, to collect information about faculty accomplishments.
